Mountainside Middle School in Scottsdale was placed on lockdown on Thursday afternoon following the discovery of a loaded weapon.

The Scottsdale Police Department stated that the lockdown was implemented as a safety measure and there were no reported injuries.

The school was under a lockdown for a duration of three hours and according to authorities, the students were allowed to leave approximately 10 minutes past the usual release time.

According to a tweet from ScottsdalePD on January 25, 2024, the school was been declared safe and no active threat was found.

Activity that prompted the police being called stemmed from an individual who informed school personnel about the presence of a firearm on a classroom floor. A school resource officer verified that the weapon was a loaded handgun.

Friday morning, school officials announced that an arrest was made overnight. The person arrested was an 11-year-old boy. His name will not be released due to being a juvenile.

Police say the charges that are being filed are as follows: minor prohibited from possessing firearms, possessing deadly weapons on school grounds, and recklessly handling deadly weapons.
