Remembering 9/11: Events In Honor Of 18th Anniversary Of Terror Attacks

This year marks the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, rocked the world and forever changed the way Americans view terrorism and our place in the world.

There will be commemorations and ceremonies all over the country, including several in Arizona, and you can be part of them.

Tempe Healing Field 

The annual tribute at Tempe Beach Park features over 3,000 American flags to represent the victims of the 9/11 attacks. A patriotic concert will take place Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Organizers will hold a tribute ceremony Wednesday at 5:46 a.m. and a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m.

Phoenix 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

The city of Phoenix will hold a memorial ceremony at City Hall on Wednesday, 9-10 a.m.

Glendale 9/11 Tower Challenge

Participants will climb 2,071 steps at Gila River Arena to represent the 110 floors of the Twin Towers. The climb begins at 8 a.m. Organizers are also holding tower challenges in Tucson and Flagstaff.

Phoenix 9/11 Day Meal Pack

An organization called 9/11 Day will hold a meal-packing service event at the Phoenix Convention Center on Wednesday, 6-8 p.m.

Avondale Public Art Dedication

The city of Avondale will dedicate the “Service. Strength. Sacrifice” public art display at City Hall on Wednesday at 9 a.m. The exhibit includes more than 100 patches that represent first responders across the state.

Scottsdale 9/11 Memorial Ride

Harley-Davidson Motorcycles of Scottsdale will host a 9/11 memorial ride Wednesday, starting with a presentation from a retired deputy chief of the Jersey City Fire Department at 9 a.m. The ride begins at 10:30 a.m. and will head north toward Prescott, visiting fire stations along the way.

Carefree 9/11 Reflection

Carefree resident and former Marine Corps sergeant Bob Jenkins will speak about his experience being on the 39th floor of the World Trade Center when the first plane hit. The reflection begins at 6 p.m. at the Town Council Chambers.

Mesa 9/11 Heroes Run

The Travis Manion Foundation will hold a 5K race and 1-mile fun run Saturday, September 14th at the ASU Polytechnic Campus.  The event begins at 6:30 a.m., with the race starting at 8 am. and the fun run at 8:45 a.m.

9/11 Tower Challenge Vaudeville Show

Tucson will remember and honor those lost on Sept. 11, 2001 with Comedian Bobby Henline will headline the 9/11 Tower Challenge Vaudeville Show at the Fox Tucson Theater, 17 W. Congress St., Tuesday, Sept. 10. A veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Henline was inspired to reenlist in the Army following the Sept. 11 attacks. Henline will be joined at the show by The Manhattan Dolls and Navy veteran/country musician Rowdy Johnson. The event raises funds for charities that support military and first responder families. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20 with discounts available through foxtucson.com or the box office, 547-3040.
