Scottsdale Man Arrested For Charity Golf Tournament Scam    

A Scottsdale man has been arrested and is facing charges for fraudulent schemes and theft  relating to a fake charity golf tournament scam .

Scottsdale police announced that Robert Alexander, 57, was collecting money from May through July on behalf of the Wounded Warrior Project for a golf charity tournament at the Silverleaf Golf Course.

An investigation led police to determine that the charity tournament didn’t exist and the Wounded Warrior Project, a legitimate nonprofit for veterans and active duty service members, did not know and had no affiliation Alexander. He was arrested on Aug. 8.

Detectives in the Financial Crimes Unit found Alexander was allegedly conducting multiple fraudulent schemes. He was also collecting money to buy golf balls at a lower price and then sell them to make a profit. All the money collected was going to Alexander. Golf balls were not being purchased and there really was no plan to then sell those golf balls. Police determine he was conning people into giving him money for his scheme.

Another victim’s report claims that he paid Alexander $5,000 to buy school coupon books. Alexander told him that he would receive a tax write-off at the end of the year. Police reports show that  four victims are included in court documents, however Scottsdale PD feel there could be more victims.

The estimated loss right currently is around $14,500, but police expect that to rise as more victims come forth.
