Scottsdale Police Release Video Footage of Shooting During Traffic Stop

On Tuesday, new video was released depicting a deadly encounter between a carjacking suspect and Scottsdale police during a traffic stop in Phoenix.

According to authorities, on Thursday, a shooting occurred when police tried to pull over 52-year-old Laquanza Young during rush hour. Young was driving a stolen vehicle at the time.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Scottsdale and Cactus Road.

According to the Scottsdale police, immediately upon being stopped, Young got out of his car and discharged several bullets from his gun towards the officers. In response, the officers returned fire, resulting in his death. This all occurred as multiple cars surrounded both the suspect and the officer’s cars. Reports detail that both the officers’ vehicles and a civilian’s vehicle were hit by gunfire.

The footage from the real-time crime center was obtained from a traffic camera located in the city of Scottsdale.

In a statement from Scottsdale police, it details what led up to the shooting. A Scottsdale police officer attempted to pull over the reported stolen car when there were no other cars ahead of it. The driver continued to drive and did not pull over. Upon the car suddenly halting at the light, just before reaching the intersection, the suspect exited his vehicle and opened fire on the officers. In self-defense and to safeguard the nearby community, the officers had no choice but to fire back.
