At approximately 2:30 in the morning on Thursday, the staff at Phoenix Children’s Hospital contacted the Phoenix police regarding a potential case of child abuse. This was after a 3-year-old girl was brought in and treated with Narcan. The child’s mother, Brown, was interviewed by the police and stated that she, her boyfriend, and her five children had been staying at the American Inn near 52nd Drive and McDowell Road. According to court documents, Brown told the police that she discovered a container filled with blue pills, later identified as fentanyl, around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. She reportedly confronted her boyfriend for having the pills in their possession.

According to officials, the five children started playing in the hotel room and one of them, a 3-year-old, took a plastic bag from the boyfriend’s bag. The child was then yelled at by Brown to dispose of the bag, which they did. However, another sibling soon realized that something was wrong after the toddler laid down.

Brown was arrested and charged with one instance of child abuse, one instance of possession of dangerous drugs, and one instance of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to court documents, the sibling reported that the toddler was experiencing difficulty breathing and had rolling eyes. The police state that Brown intervened by inserting her fingers into the child’s throat while she was turning pale and instructed the other children to contact 911.

The authorities did not disclose the contents of the bag held by the child, nor did they mention whether she tested positive for drug use.

According to authorities, during questioning, Brown confessed to using methamphetamine earlier that day, while her partner had been using it throughout the day. Legal records reveal that Brown had taken her children outside because both she and her partner were smoking heavily, causing the room to become filled with smoke, and she did not want her kids exposed to it.

After conducting a search of the hotel room, law enforcement discovered a transparent, crystalline material suspected to be methamphetamine, along with a clear pipe. Brown was charged with child abuse, possession of a dangerous drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was not disclosed whether or not Brown’s partner was also detained or facing any accusations.
