The United States has released a travel warning regarding travel to Mexico in anticipation of the upcoming spring break.

The warning informs all tourists to take caution as crime has the potential to happen in any part of Mexico, particularly in popular tourist spots.

According to the advisory, it is important for travelers to remain alert and vigilant, steer clear of locations known for illegal activities, and quickly remove themselves from any potentially hazardous situations. Additionally, U.S. citizens are advised to be extra cautious when visiting the downtown areas of popular spring break destinations such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, particularly at night.

The advisory cautioned against the consumption of alcohol and pharmaceuticals in the country due to potential risks. It mentioned that unregulated alcohol in Mexico may be contaminated, as there have been instances where American citizens have experienced loss of consciousness or injury after consuming potentially tainted alcohol.

The United States also warned that possessing and using drugs in Mexico, including marijuana, is against the law and may lead to a prolonged imprisonment.

According to the advisory, individuals who are citizens of the United States have faced severe illness or even death in Mexico as a result of consuming synthetic drugs or tampered prescription pills.

In addition, included in the warning, American citizens have been targeted for rape and sexual assault in Mexico, with perpetrators possibly targeting individuals who are intoxicated or isolated, or using drugs to incapacitate them.

The advisory additionally advised against engaging in actions in Mexico that may lead to being arrested, such as behaving in a disorderly and intoxicated manner, urinating in public, having open containers of alcohol in vehicles, and possessing a firearm, even if it is only a small amount of ammunition.
