A former coach for the women’s basketball team at Central Arizona College (CAC) has been arrested by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) for charges related to fraud and theft.

An investigation was initiated by authorities in August of 2022 after a CAC representative reported a potential case of theft to PCSO.

An investigation uncovered that Denise Cardenas, 44, had embezzled a sum of almost $28,000 from student financial aid and team fundraiser funds between the years 2021 and 2022.

On February 24, Cardenas, who is no longer employed by CAC, was apprehended in Yuma according to the PCSO.

Cardenas, also known as Coach Gooch, is being charged with six counts of fraudulent activities and six counts of theft.

Currently, there have been six individuals who have reported being victimized: four students, one parent, and the school. It is suspected that there could potentially be additional victims. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact PCSO at 520-866-5111.

Sheriff Mark Lamb expressed his gratitude to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office investigators for their aid in tracing the money trail. He also acknowledged the assistance of the Yuma Police Department in apprehending the suspect.
