On Wednesday, the Phoenix City Council chose District 3 Councilwoman Debra Stark to serve as the city’s Vice Mayor.

Stark, the District 3 Councilmember, has served in the Phoenix City Council since 2016 and previously had public service roles in Maricopa County and Peoria.

Mayor Kate Gallego expressed her enthusiasm to collaborate with Stark, who she characterized as a devoted and hardworking public servant.

Gallego spoke of the numerous tasks their former planning and development director had undertaken, mentioning specifically her efforts to upgrade the procedures in that department as well as her speeding up of timelines for significant projects including affordable housing.

“Her leadership on public safety and transportation has been remarkable,” she continued. “I’m looking forward to working together as vice mayor to keep Phoenix the premier city in the United States.”

Stark’s initial session as vice mayor will begin at the next official city council meeting on January 24th.
