Library Honoring Senator John McCain To Be Built At Arizona State University

On Thursday, the McCain family announced the investment to establish the John S. McCain III Library in honor of Senator John McCain.

The John S. McCain III Library will be built at Arizona State University in Tempe on a 22.5-acre section near Papago Park. The McCain Library will serve as an anchor, multipurpose facility that will provide Arizonans a place to learn, research, develop, and work. Considerations for the center include a visitors’ center, an Arizona home for the Washington, DC-based McCain Institute, and a McCain Library and Archives, where scholars, students, journalists, and the community can study the Senator’s work and life.

This community facility is a true gift to the state of Arizona, which will carry the namesake of the American hero, Senator John S. McCain III, and embody the principles that guided him, democracy, national security, public service, freedom, character-driven leadership, human dignity, and community building.

“Our family is honored to be a part of this special effort to build a lasting tribute to my husband, a Library we believe will serve the State of Arizona and its people the way John served his country. This effort started with the enthusiastic support of Governor Doug Ducey and continued with the equally strong support of Governor Katie Hobbs. A true bi-partisan effort that we greatly appreciate,” said Cindy McCain.

“We are looking forward to continuing the McCain family’s strong partnership with ASU, and their world-class students, faculty, and leadership, to serve all communities within the state of Arizona. There is no better partner in this endeavor, than Dr. Michael Crow, who has pioneered many educational programs targeting the underserved communities by breaking down barriers to access and facilitating connection to educational opportunities for people of all ages,” commented Jack McCain.

John McCain served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years while also spending five years as a prisoner of war after being shot down in Vietnam in 1967. After retiring from the military, he served Arizona in the U.S. Senate for more than three decades and was the Republican nominee for president in 2008. McCain died from a brain tumor in August of 2018.
