Looking for a financial incentive to cut your water usage? The City of Scottsdale is offering a new money incentive to residents, in an effort to reduce the use of water amongst the state’s ongoing water crisis.

As the cities work to tackle a possible future of less water from the Colorado River, they’ve turned to incentivizing residents to use less.

Due to cuts in Colorado River water allotments, cities across the state are working feverishly to cut water usage.

The Colorado River provides water to over 40 million people and more than four million acres of farmland across seven states. Reportedly due to less snow, water lost to evaporation and warmer temperatures water access that was promised a century ago because of less snow, warmer temperatures and water lost to evaporation, water will not be able to be delivered to all. Government officials are saying in order to keep the system operational and water flowing in the dams, it is imperative that we use less water due to nature not providing the water resources as it has done so in the past.

What Scottsdale Is Offering To Residents?

The City of Scottsdale is offering rebates for turf removal. The rebates come in at $2 per square foot, up to a total of $5,000.

The city has also instituted a new ordinance that bans grass landscapes in the front yard of new homes. The ordinance takes effect in August.

Currently the City of Phoenix is not offering any residents rebates to encourage water use reduction.

Besides conserving water, there are additional plans to increase the state’s water supply. A number of plans to increase Arizona’s water supply, such as reclaiming wastewater and desalination, are being discussed and considered. The details and plans will need to work through the process of decision making as each one has their pros and cons.
