Renovations To Start on the Biltmore Golf Club
After years of debate and pushback, plans for the Biltmore Golf Club renovations will move forward.
This week, JDM Partners, the owner of Phoenix’s 36-hole golf club in the historical Biltmore neighborhood, announced that construction is scheduled to begin this month. However renovation plans are not to the full extent that JDM Partners originally wanted.
In the original the plans, JDM Partners had planned to renovate everything. Those plans consisted of the construction of new buildings, which included a 6,000-square-foot pavilion to host non-golf-related events. Those original plans incited major debate and faced strong pushback from some of the homeowners in the community.
In a battle that dates back to 2020, Jerry Colangelo, Phoenix Suns owner and JDM principle went back and forth with Richard Arroyo, the leader of the homeowners group over the major construction plans. In 2021, the Phoenix Board of Adjustment, sided against Colangelo and JDM to allow the construction plans to proceed.
Douglas Fredrikson Architects is the architecture firm that has been hired to work with JDM Golf, along with Sundt Construction, to see the project to completion. The architectural plans have incorporated many elements of the Biltmore Resort, including the signature concrete Biltmore block and patina copper fascia that is prominent in the resort’s historical design.
Phase one of the Biltmore Golf Club renovation project is expected to be completed in early 2023. Phase 1 plans consist of a new golf shop and member facilities and underground cart storage. The new golf shop and underground cart storage will maximize the courses’ space and provide a refreshed appearance to all members and guests.
Once complete, much needed additional parking at the golf club will be expanded and additional landscaping will be added to blend beautifully with the Biltmore community and world-renowned resort.
In the second phase, a new clubhouse and restaurant will be built in place of the existing event tent and clubhouse.
“We sincerely appreciate the passion and nostalgia so many of our friends and neighbors have for this stunning oasis,” said JDM Partners principal, Jerry Colangelo. “We’d like to thank them for working with us to build a better Biltmore Golf Club.”
The Arizona Biltmore Golf Club’s golf courses and existing clubhouse will remain open during phase one construction. During construction, parking will be limited and will require parking to be valet only.
Construction plans have also called for the renovation and restoration to the Biltmore’s Adobe Course. The Adobe Course, which opened for play in 1929, is one of the state’s most historic golf courses. Scottsdale resident Tom Lehman, a five-time PGA TOUR champion, will lead the golf course design team. Every effort will be made to preserve the course’s famous parkland setting. The Adobe Course is expected to be completed in 2023.
