Smoke and fire detectors have joined the list of recalled items. About 180,000 of the battery-powered detectors have been recalled due to a risk of failure.

On the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website , it states that the detectors may contain a misaligned internal switch. The defective switch may cause the alarms to not work correctly and may fail to alert people if there is a fire

Universal Security Instruments’ 10-year battery operated alarms are included in the recall. The recalled alarms have “Universal” and “Smoke & Fire Alarm” on the front cover. There is a label on the back that lists the model numbers and data codes.

The recalled models are MI3050S and MI3050SB, and they have data codes between 2015JAN19 through 2016JUL11.

During installation of the detectors, there have been 134 reports of the detectors not properly activating.

According to the recall, the detectors were sold from July 2015 through December 2016 at online specialty wholesalers.

Consumers should inspect their detectors and make sure that they activate properly. This can be done by pressing the test button. A consumer should also check the model and data codes.

If the alarm sounds, the detector activated correctly and is fine; however, if it doesn’t sound, contact Universal Security for a replacement detector.
