Mesa High School Track Coach Arrested, Accused of Child Sex Crimes

On Tuesday, a part-time track coach at Mesa High School was arrested by Tempe police after he tried to pay a teen girl in exchange for sex.

Angel Jesus Torres, 27, was arrested and booked into jail on one count each of child sex trafficking, furnishing harmful items to a minor and aggravated luring of a minor,.

There is no evidence that any Mesa High School students are victims. The district reported that Torres was hired in 2013 and is no longer a coach.

According to court paperwork, in October, Torres was talking to an undercover cop posing as a 14-year-old girl on social media. Police say Torres agreed to pay $150 to have sex with the girl and take photos. He also sent sexual pictures of himself to the girl.

In addition, Torres admitted to police that he planned to have sex with multiple women and often asked them about their age. When questioned about the conversation with the teen, Torres said he knew her age and admitted to sending a sexual photo of himself. Torres said he did not meet up with the girl because she seemed “uncomfortable” and did not send sexual photos in return.

Tempe police are asking the public to report any known information about Torres possibly behaving inappropriately with children. The investigation is ongoing.
