Phoenix has no shortage of beautiful cocktail bars. Sometimes, though, you don’t want a $19 cocktail served under perfect lighting. You want a great dive bar.
Fortunately, some of the best dive bars in Phoenix are tucked into the neighborhoods of North Central Phoenix, Biltmore and Arcadia. These are the places for cold beer, strong drinks, pool tables, jukeboxes, neighborhood regulars and nights that somehow last a little longer than you planned.
But before we get to our favorites, what exactly makes a great dive bar?
What Makes a Great Dive Bar?
It should be a little dark. Ideally dark enough that walking outside afterward requires a moment of adjustment.
There should be regulars. A great dive isn’t a concept created in a conference room. It’s a neighborhood bar where somebody at the counter has been sitting in roughly the same seat for years.
The drinks shouldn’t require much explanation. Beer should be cold. Mixed drinks should be strong. Nobody needs to tell you about the provenance of the ice.
There should be something to do. Pool tables, darts, a jukebox, karaoke, arcade games or simply excellent people-watching all qualify.
It shouldn’t take itself too seriously. This may be the most important requirement. Great dive bars have personality, imperfections and absolutely no interest in becoming the hottest new place in town.
And finally, you should want to stay longer than you planned.
By those standards, North Central Phoenix, Biltmore and Arcadia have some pretty great dive bars.
Here are 12 worth knowing.
1. The Little Woody
4228 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018
Hidden behind an understated entrance on Indian School Road, The Little Woody has become one of Arcadia’s quintessential neighborhood bars.
It’s dark, cozy and just polished enough to make you wonder whether it technically qualifies as a dive. Then you find the pool tables, darts and games and stop worrying about definitions.
The location also has legitimate neighborhood-bar history. The current Little Woody opened in 2012, but the building housed bars long before that.
Why we like it: It manages to be cool without feeling like it’s trying very hard to be cool.
2. Dilly Dally Lounge
3639 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018
If Little Woody is the slightly refined version of an Arcadia dive bar, Dilly Dally Lounge is much closer to the real thing.
The neighborhood around it has changed dramatically over the years. Dilly Dally mostly hasn’t.
Expect dim lighting, inexpensive drinks, pool, darts, a jukebox and the wonderfully random collection of people that makes a good neighborhood bar interesting.
Why we like it: Arcadia has gotten considerably fancier. Dilly Dally hasn’t gotten the memo.
3. JT’s Bar & Grill
4829 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018
JT’s Bar & Grill proves that some of the best neighborhood spots in Phoenix are hiding in strip malls.
It’s small, casual and known as much for its food as its bar. The wings are the thing here, particularly JT’s signature “Works” style.
This is where you go when the plan is essentially wings, beer and whatever game happens to be on television.
Why we like it: Great dive bars aren’t supposed to have destination-worthy food. JT’s apparently didn’t get that memo either.
4. Harvey’s Wineburger
4812 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85016
There are burgers, and then there’s the Wineburger.
Harvey’s signature burger gets a splash of red wine while it cooks, but otherwise this longtime Phoenix neighborhood bar is refreshingly uninterested in culinary theater.
There are TVs, pool, darts, beer, bourbon and burgers.
No elaborate backstory printed on the menu. No need to make a reservation three weeks in advance.
Why we like it: The Wineburger alone earns Harvey’s a spot on our list of great Phoenix dive bars.
5. Pomeroy’s
5555 N. 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014
Pomeroy’s may be the purest dive bar on this list.
It opened in the early 1980s and has retained the wood-paneled, dark-room character of an old-school neighborhood watering hole. There are pool tables, darts, shuffleboard, arcade games and plenty of places to settle in for longer than originally intended.
It’s also exactly the sort of place that is becoming increasingly difficult to find as North Central Phoenix continues to change around it.
Why we like it: Pomeroy’s doesn’t look retro. It just never stopped being what it was.
6. Swizzle Inn
5835 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85016
The Swizzle Inn doesn’t shy away from its dive-bar credentials.
Hidden in a strip mall near 16th Street and Bethany Home Road, Swizzle has been around since the 1990s and combines a pirate/beach-bar sensibility with Christmas lights that apparently see no reason to observe the calendar.
There’s a pool table, jukebox, cold beer and straightforward cocktails.
Why we like it: Year-round Christmas lights. In a pirate-ish dive bar. In a Phoenix strip mall. That’s enough.
7. Chopper John’s
2547 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016
Every good list of Phoenix dive bars needs a little rock and roll.
Chopper John’s brings the biker-bar edge with live music, pool, darts and the kind of dark, unpolished atmosphere that would be very difficult for a restaurant group to successfully manufacture.
It has been part of the Indian School corridor for years and remains one of the area’s more distinctive neighborhood bars.
Why we like it: It’s loud, local and unapologetically itself.
8. Dodey’s Central
7051 N. 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85020
Head north on Seventh Street and you’ll eventually reach Dodey’s Central, another survivor of the increasingly polished North Central Phoenix restaurant and bar scene.
This is a neighborhood sports dive in the most complimentary sense of the phrase: inexpensive drinks, cold beer, TVs, pool tables, darts, arcade games and regulars.
And unlike most of the places on this list, Dodey’s gets going remarkably early.
Why we like it: Sometimes you want a cocktail bar. Sometimes you want a cold beer and a pool table. Dodey’s understands the difference.
9. The Whining Pig Uptown
1612 E. Bethany Home Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016
The Whining Pig stretches our definition of “dive bar,” but in exactly the right direction.
The Uptown location is tiny. Really tiny. And that lack of space is part of what makes it work.
Rather than a traditional full bar, The Whining Pig focuses on beer, wine and cider, with a large and frequently changing selection. Add board games and a room small enough that avoiding conversation with your neighbors can become difficult, and you’ve got a very good neighborhood bar.
Why we like it: It feels more like someone’s slightly chaotic neighborhood living room than a commercial establishment.
10. Thunderbird Lounge
710 W. Montecito Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85013
Thunderbird Lounge is another one that requires an asterisk.
It opened in 2019, so this isn’t some forgotten Phoenix bar that has been sitting untouched since 1974.
It just feels like it might have.
Located in the Melrose District, Thunderbird leans heavily into vintage Phoenix nostalgia with retro furniture, wood paneling, a jukebox, classic arcade games and a big backyard-style patio.
Dive-bar purists can call it a retro lounge instead.
We’re including it.
Why we like it: Arcade games and a big patio make it dangerously easy to turn one drink into an evening.
11. HOLLYROCK
537 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix, AZ 85012
At Seventh Street and Camelback Road, HOLLYROCK carries on the neighborhood-bar tradition of a space many longtime Phoenicians still remember as HB Hanratty’s.
There are pool tables, darts, a jukebox, karaoke, inexpensive drinks and plenty of regulars.
In other words, it checks quite a few boxes from our dive-bar test.
Why we like it: In one of the fastest-changing parts of Phoenix, there’s still a place on Camelback where shooting pool can constitute the entire evening’s agenda.
12. The Bar
3174 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016
The Bar is probably the most debatable inclusion on our list.
It’s more polished than Pomeroy’s, more intentional than Dilly Dally and doesn’t carry the decades of accumulated wear that give the oldest dives their character.
But it still functions as something increasingly valuable in the Biltmore area: a casual neighborhood bar where you can actually just go have a drink.
Think of it as our dive-bar-adjacent selection.
Why we like it: Not every neighborhood bar needs to be old to become a neighborhood institution.
Why Phoenix Dive Bars Still Matter
The interesting thing about this list isn’t really cheap drinks or pool tables.
It’s that North Central Phoenix, Biltmore and Arcadia have changed enormously.
New restaurants open. Old buildings disappear. Neighborhoods get more expensive. Cocktails get more elaborate. And increasingly, going out can feel like something you’re supposed to plan.
Dive bars are the opposite.
You walk in. You find a stool. You order something. Maybe you recognize someone.
And if it’s a really good dive bar, a couple of hours later you realize you never actually decided to stay.
You just did.
