Phoenix’s Best Hikes for Fall Weather

Phoenix’s Best Hikes for Fall Weather

Fall in Phoenix brings cooler days, clear skies, and a softer light over the desert. It’s the perfect time to get outside and explore Phoenix’s best hikes. From tough summit climbs to easy desert walks, here are some of the best hikes to take advantage of during the fall weather!

1. Camelback Mountain – Echo Canyon Trail

A local favorite and an essential Phoenix experience, Camelback Mountain’s Echo Canyon Trail offers a steep and rewarding challenge. The 2.5-mile round-trip climb features rocky terrain, panoramic city views, and a heart-pumping ascent. Cooler fall temperatures make this demanding hike far more enjoyable, especially for early risers catching the sunrise.

2. Piestewa Peak – Summit Trail

Located in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Piestewa Peak is another iconic hike for Valley residents and visitors. The 2.4-mile trail gains over 1,200 feet in elevation, leading to sweeping vistas of downtown Phoenix and beyond. In fall, you’ll find the trail less harsh, making it perfect for a quick after-work or weekend adventure.

3. South Mountain Park – Hidden Valley Trail

South Mountain Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the country, with trails for every skill level. The Hidden Valley Trail offers moderate difficulty and unique rock formations, including the famous “Fat Man’s Pass.” As temperatures cool, this trail becomes an excellent way to explore desert wildlife and geology.

4. Pinnacle Peak Trail

In North Scottsdale, Pinnacle Peak Trail provides a smoother hike with exceptional desert views. The 3.5-mile round trip features gentle inclines and well-maintained paths—ideal for a leisurely fall morning. The granite summit and saguaros make for a quintessential Sonoran Desert scene.

5. Dreamy Draw – Quartz Ridge Trail

For a quieter experience, Quartz Ridge Trail offers a balance of solitude and scenic beauty. The moderate 3.2-mile loop winds through wildflower-dotted slopes and rocky ridges, capturing the best of fall’s desert serenity.

Even in the fall, desert hiking requires preparation. Always bring plenty of water—at least one liter per hour of hiking—and wear sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Start early to avoid midday heat, and let someone know your hiking plans before you head out. Stick to marked trails, carry a fully charged phone, and be mindful of desert wildlife. With the right preparation, you can enjoy Phoenix’s best hikes safely and make the most of the season outdoors.

Whether you’re chasing summits or scenic views, fall in Phoenix is hiking season at its finest. The cooler air and desert landscapes remind hikers why the Valley shines this time of year!
