Expedia Launches New Feature That Turns Instagram Reels into Bookable Trips

Expedia is changing how travelers plan their next getaway. With the launch of its new “Create Your Own Trip” feature, the travel platform now lets users transform Instagram Reels into complete, bookable itineraries. This innovative tool is powered by generative artificial intelligence and is designed to turn social media inspiration into real-world travel plans within seconds.

For travelers who often save Instagram posts for future trip ideas, this new capability removes several steps from the planning process. Instead of jumping between social media, search engines, and booking platforms, Expedia users can now paste a link to a Reel and receive a personalized travel plan based on the video content.

How It Works

The new feature, currently in beta on desktop, analyzes Instagram Reels to detect locations, activities, landmarks, and other visual details. Expedia’s AI then builds an itinerary that includes hotels, flights, and similar experiences. Travelers can customize the plan based on their preferred travel dates, budget, and accommodations.

For example, if a Reel shows a traveler enjoying tapas in Barcelona, visiting Park Güell, and biking along the waterfront, Expedia can recognize those elements and create a Barcelona trip featuring similar activities and hotel options. Users can then adjust the plan or book everything with a few clicks.

A Response to Social Media Travel Trends

According to Expedia’s 2024 Travel Trends report, nearly 80 percent of Millennials and Gen Z travelers say social media influences their vacation choices. These generations prefer visual, authentic content from real people over traditional travel ads. Instagram Reels, in particular, have become a go-to source for ideas, showing scenic spots, hidden gems, and itineraries in a format that feels accessible and personal.

Expedia’s leadership team said they recognized a gap between inspiration and action. With so many travelers discovering destinations on social media but not knowing how to plan a trip, the company developed a tool to bridge that gap. The “Create Your Own Trip” feature offers a seamless way to go from watching a video to booking a vacation inspired by it.

Behind the Technology

This feature is built using Expedia’s internal AI platform and integrates multiple technologies. Visual recognition scans each frame of a Reel to identify landmarks, locations, and activities. Natural language processing interprets any text or speech in the video. The system then matches this data with Expedia’s global inventory of flights, hotels, and activities to build a complete trip suggestion.

The result is a dynamic itinerary that feels curated by a human but is generated instantly by advanced software. Users can edit the plan, add new elements, or choose alternative destinations based on their interests.

What It Means for Influencers and Creators

Travel influencers may benefit significantly from this launch. In the future, content creators could collaborate with Expedia or link directly to trip suggestions inspired by their videos. This feature makes influencer content more actionable and opens the door to partnerships that could provide additional revenue or affiliate opportunities.

Influencers who already serve as trusted sources for travel recommendations may now become gateways to bookings, adding more value to their content and strengthening their influence in the travel space.

Opportunities for Travel Brands and Small Businesses

Expedia’s tool could also support local tourism by increasing visibility for businesses featured in influencer content. A café in Florence or a surf school in Oahu that appears in a popular Reel might see a surge in bookings if travelers can easily recreate the experience.

Small businesses that offer unique experiences, boutique hotels, or off-the-beaten-path activities now have another reason to build relationships with creators. As short-form content continues to grow in popularity, partnering with influencers could become a key strategy for travel marketing.

Future Expansion

The “Create Your Own Trip” feature is currently only available for Instagram Reels and desktop users in the United States. However, Expedia has announced plans to expand the tool to mobile platforms and other video content types such as TikTok and YouTube Shorts in the near future.

As the feature evolves, Expedia may also introduce personalized filters for preferences such as family-friendly travel, luxury experiences, or eco-conscious accommodations.

A Shift in How Travel is Planned

Expedia’s move signals a major change in the way consumers plan travel. Instead of starting with a destination in mind, more travelers are discovering places through video content. This content-driven planning style is especially popular with Gen Z, who often decide where to go based on what they see online.

By embedding itself directly into that process, Expedia becomes more than a booking engine. It becomes a travel planning companion that works in real time, adapting to what inspires a user and helping them act on it immediately.

Things to Keep in Mind

While this feature is exciting, users should still verify information before finalizing bookings. Not every Reel accurately represents the availability or quality of a destination. Double-checking hotel reviews, reading activity details, and confirming pricing remains important.

Also, because the tool is in beta, users may encounter limitations or inconsistencies. The desktop-only format may not be ideal for those who prefer mobile browsing, but future updates will likely address this.

A New Era of Seamless Travel Planning

Expedia’s “Create Your Own Trip” feature is one of the most forward-thinking tools released in the travel space. By connecting the moment of inspiration directly to the moment of action, Expedia removes many of the friction points travelers face when planning trips.

This launch reflects the broader evolution of the travel industry toward hyper-personalization, faster decision-making, and integration with social media platforms. For travelers who want to turn that dream trip seen on Instagram into a reality, the process has never been easier.
