Zeekr, the premium electric vehicle brand under China’s Geely Holding Group, has begun testing its autonomous vehicles in central Phoenix. This move marks a significant step in the brand’s collaboration with Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving technology company, as they work together to develop purpose-built autonomous ride-hailing vehicles.
The vehicle being tested, the Zeekr RT, is an electric minivan designed specifically for autonomous transportation. It features a spacious, passenger-focused cabin that eliminates the need for traditional driver controls. Instead, the vehicle relies on a suite of sensors, including advanced lidar and cameras, to navigate city streets safely.
Phoenix has emerged as a major testing ground for autonomous vehicle technology, with its favorable regulatory environment and well-maintained road infrastructure. The city has previously welcomed multiple self-driving car initiatives, making it an ideal location for Zeekr’s real-world trials. As part of the testing phase, Zeekr’s vehicles are being evaluated in various traffic conditions, including busy intersections, pedestrian-heavy zones, and freeway environments.
Residents of Phoenix have already reported sightings of the Zeekr RT in action, seamlessly moving through the city as it gathers valuable data to refine its autonomous driving capabilities. The testing will help Zeekr and Waymo assess the vehicle’s performance, ensuring it meets safety and reliability standards before broader deployment.
This development signals a growing shift toward autonomous mobility, with Phoenix positioned as a leader in the space. As Zeekr continues its trials, the city remains at the forefront of the future of transportation, showcasing how self-driving technology is poised to transform urban travel.
