Governor Katie Hobbs Addresses Fiscal Crisis at Isaac School District

  • January 23, 2025
  • theumphx

Phoenix, AZ – Governor Katie Hobbs has issued a statement regarding the urgent financial crisis threatening the Isaac School District, which serves over 4,800 students and employs more than 650 staff members.

“I applaud the Arizona State Board of Education for their swift action in placing the district under financial receivership,” Hobbs said. “However, despite this intervention, the district is grappling with severe financial challenges that could disrupt education and employment midway through the school year.”

The Maricopa County Treasurer announced during a State Board of Education hearing that warrant requests for the district would no longer be fulfilled after January 21. This move jeopardizes the district’s ability to manage cash flow, pay its staff, and cover critical expenses, creating uncertainty about its operational viability.

Urgent Appeal for Flexibility

Governor Hobbs called on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to provide additional financial flexibility to the district, emphasizing the importance of minimizing disruption for students and teachers.

“My office will continue to work with all parties to find a solution that ensures students receive uninterrupted academic instruction and staff continue to receive paychecks,” Hobbs added. “While accountability and fiscal restructuring will proceed under financial receivership, we must prioritize the needs of students and staff.”

Commitment to Resolution

Hobbs pledged to make her staff available to facilitate a resolution to the crisis and expressed her dedication to keeping the educational and employment impact as minimal as possible.

The situation remains critical, and state officials are collaborating to address the challenges faced by the Isaac School District.
