U.S. Marshals Track and Apprehend Yuma Homicide Suspect in Central Florida
A coordinated multi-agency manhunt culminated on Monday afternoon with the arrest of Clifton Boggess, a fugitive homicide suspect, in Lake Placid, Florida. Boggess, 62, is wanted by the Yuma (CO) Police Department in connection to the disappearance and death of Britani Meek.
Britani Meek was reported missing on October 25, 2023. The investigation led to the discovery of Meek’s vehicle and her remains on a rural property in Yuma County. On July 24, 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for Boggess, charging him with first-degree murder, felony tampering with a deceased body, second-degree kidnapping, second-degree motor vehicle theft, and third-degree assault.
Following the issuance of the warrant, the Yuma Police Department requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service’s Colorado Violent Offender Task Force (COVOTF) to locate and apprehend Boggess. Information gathered by Yuma detectives indicated that Boggess had likely fled the state. COVOTF investigators developed leads suggesting that Boggess had traveled to central Florida. This information was shared with the U.S. Marshals’ Florida-Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force (FCRFTF) in West Palm Beach, FL.
FCRFTF investigators quickly initiated a local investigation and set up surveillance on a residence in Sebring, FL. On Monday, investigators located Boggess at a commercial storage facility near US Hwy 27 and S Main Ave in Lake Placid. Boggess was taken into custody without incident by members of the U.S. Marshals FCRFTF. He was then transported to the Highlands County Jail in Sebring, FL, where he was booked on the outstanding warrant. Boggess remains in custody pending his extradition back to Colorado. It is important to note that Boggess is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The successful arrest was a result of extensive cooperation between the Yuma Police Department, U.S. Marshals Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshals Florida-Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force, and several Florida law enforcement agencies, including the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Indian River Sheriff’s Office, Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, Port St. Lucie Police Department, and Fort Pierce Police Department.
The Colorado Violent Offender Task Force (COVOTF) is a multi-jurisdictional fugitive task force dedicated to apprehending the most violent offenders, including those wanted for murder, assault, sex offenses, and other serious crimes throughout the state and country. This operation exemplifies the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in tracking down and capturing dangerous fugitives.
