The upcoming departure of Phoenix City Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari was announced on Monday, as she stated her intention to leave the council next week in order to concentrate on her campaign for Congress.
Ansari is hoping to replace Rep. Ruben Gallego as he attempts a run for an Arizona Senate seat. Gallego’s district encompasses the majority of downtown, southern and western areas of Phoenix, as well as portions of Glendale.
In 2021, Ansari’s professional journey commenced as a policy advisor at the United Nations, where she actively advocated for the reformation of climate change policies. Upon joining District 7, Ansari’s attention shifted towards matters of sustainability, housing, education, climate action, reproductive freedoms, and worker’s rights.
She is currently the representative for District 7. In the previous year, she held the position of vice mayor until Debra Stark assumed the role in January 2024.
According to the City Council, Ansari’s departure will take effect on March 28. Once she has left, the appointment process will commence, as per law.
The City Council anticipates that a member will fill her position in the beginning of April.
