Metro Phoenix To Receive $36.3 Million in Federal Funding To Help Homelessness

Arizona programs are getting more than $53 million in federal funding to support the fight against homelessness, including $36 million for metro Phoenix.

As the region sees continued increases in the number of people experiencing homelessness, more than $36 million in newly announced federal funding is on the way to help fund dozens of local homelessness programs. The money will be distributed to 32 programs that help provide housing and services to people experiencing homelessness in the Maricopa region.

“Helping people find their way out of homelessness can be challenging, but this award will help strengthen the region’s ability to care for families, youth, and individuals with no place to call home,” says Vicki Phillips, chair of the Maricopa Regional Continuum of Care Board. “Housing is one of the key components to ending homelessness. This money will go a long way toward helping people find housing situations that are affordable, stable, and permanent.”

The announcement comes on the heels of the most recent Point in Time homelessness street count, which found thousands of individuals living in unsheltered conditions across the region. Final numbers from the count will be released in late April.

On March 28, 2023, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced Continuum of Care program grant funding for critically needed support to local programs serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The Maricopa Regional Continuum of Care award of $36,265,956 will provide funding for 32 local homelessness programs.

The funding will support the following:

  • 28 programs that provide housing and services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
  • $855,158 for the Coordinated Entry project to prioritize and place individuals and families in appropriate housing.
  • $620,921 for the Homeless Management Information System, a local information technology system used to collect data on the provision of housing and services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
  • Funding for Continuum of Care planning.
