The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office announced that last week, MCSO detention officers seized approximately 260 pills in the jail system, suspected to be fentanyl. The seizures were a compilation of three unique incidents.

In all three incidences the pills are believed to be fentanyl, but are pending lab analysis.

The first involved a male inmate who was observed passing pills to another. Upon seizure, a search found the inmate had 160 pills inside his body. The pills were recovered after officers obtained a search warrant from a judge for his person.

The second incident involved seizure during a routine search at the time of an inmate booking. The male inmate was in possession of 65 pills on his person.

The third incident involved a female inmate who had 35 pills concealed in her genitalia. Officers discovered the concealed bag at search during booking.

All three inmates attempted to bring the suspected fentanyl into the Intake, Transfer and Release facility.

Sheriff Penzone acknowledged his staff, praising their commitment to suppress this criminal behavior that endangers the lives of all is only exceeded by the exceptional work and tireless dedication of the members of the organization. “Professionalism and high integrity will be the defining attributes of the men and women in this organization,” said Sheriff Penzone.
