New Things To Expect at the WM Phoenix Open

Each year, the WM Phoenix Open draws record breaking crowds. The popular annual tradition of the PGA golf tournament attracts big time players and people from all over the country to watch great golf in the Arizona sunshine.

The hosts, the Thunderbirds don’t disappoint and every year seem to add some type of new aspect to the hitting the greens and new improvements to the “People’s Open.” In keeping with that theme, the Thunderbirds have created a new Fan Zone. The designated area will have more shaded areas, better views of the 10th tee, two LED screens to watch the action and a 25,000-square-foot merchandise tent. The popular 16th hole is also getting an upgrade with brand-new scoreboards. Additional improvements will include new concession stands and new restrooms.

One of the biggest factors that is new at this year’s open is the winning purse. The WM Phoenix Open as been deemed for the first time, one of the PGA’s elevated status events. As a result the purse has increased to $20 million, with $3.6 million going to the winner with a coveted 500 FedExCup points. One of the biggest names in the golf world, world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, announced he was joining the WM Phoenix Open field on Wednesday. Other big names are expected to follow.
