As thousands of trick-or-treaters prepare to explore neighborhoods statewide for Halloween, it is important to remind residents of important guidelines that will help everyone enjoy a fun and safe holiday.
Halloween safety tips for drivers and trick-or-treaters:
- Drivers should always watch for people crossing the street, especially near intersections and crosswalks
- Stop your vehicle well before a crosswalk to allow plenty of space for those crossing and help other motorists see them, and never pass a car stopped at a crosswalk
- Obey the speed limit so it is easier to watch for pedestrians or bicyclists
- Trick-or-treaters should stay on sidewalks and in well-lit areas where possible
- Trick-or-treaters should remain visible when walking and always cross at an intersection or crosswalk
- Always look both ways before crossing the street
- Carry a flashlight or glowstick, or wear reflective clothing when walking at night
