Phoenix Offering $5,000 Incentive for Mechanic Positions

The City of Phoenix is offering a $5,000 hiring incentive for two critical positions in the Public Works Department – Heavy Equipment Mechanics and Equipment Service Worker II.

Both positions engage in meaningful work to ensure residents have access to the services they need every day. These mechanic positions maintain and repair more than 7,000 pieces of City equipment. Apply today.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic — $27.27-$30.60/hourly

A Heavy Equipment Mechanic repairs and maintains fire equipment, heavy diesel trucks, refuse collection equipment, earth-moving equipment, and related construction equipment with various types of hydraulic components. Heavy Equipment Mechanics also perform regular preventative maintenance, schedule and conduct safety inspections, test drive vehicles, and records repairs and services on work orders. Some positions may be required to provide emergency response during severe weather (floods, storms, etc.).

Minimum requirements include five years journey level experience and experience performing skilled tasks in repair and maintenance as an automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic.

Equipment Service Worker II — $18.87-23.05/hourly

Equipment Service Worker IIs performs skilled servicing, mechanical maintenance, and minor repair of automotive, heavy duty, and other motorized equipment. Duties include performing routine servicing and maintenance of engines, transmissions, chassis, air conditioning and tune ups; repairing and replacement of wheel bearings, brakes, balancing tires and wheels and patching and repairing tires. Work also involves maintaining service parts and inventory records, and installing and fabricating City decals, light bar kits, arrow boards, dash switches, electrical wiring, gauges and other equipment and components.

Minimum requirements include two years of experience in automotive servicing, maintenance and repair of vehicular equipment.

​In addition to the $5,000 hiring incentive, both positions include a comprehensive benefits package which includes traditional pension with employer and employee contributions, choice of medical HMO, PPO, or HSA/HDHP plan, wellness incentive of up to $720 annually, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, 401(a) and 457 plans, medical enrollment includes a monthly $150 City contribution to a Post-Employment Health Plan, bus/light rail pass, tuition reimbursement program, and paid time off (12.5 paid holidays, 12 vacation days, and 15 sick days and personal leave days).
