Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Arizona

It looks like our cooler monsoon weather might be over. An excessive heat warning has been issued for the Phoenix area and other parts of the state, as temperatures are expected to reach 110°F.

The heat warning was issued by the National Weather Service and in effect for the following counties: La Paz, Maricopa, Mohave, and Yuma from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Also a small portion of Coconino from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Friday.

An excessive heat warning is issued when a prolonged period of above normal temperatures near 110°F. Storm chances are not expected in the low deserts areas.

Aug. 30 is predicted to be the hottest day in the Valley since July.

Due to the excessive heat, the City of Phoenix will close popular hiking trails, such as Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Preventing Heat Exhaustion/Heat Stroke

There are many precautions that are important to take during high temperature days to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The Arizona Department of Health Services suggests taking the following precautions:

• Stay in air-conditioned buildings
• Drink water before, during, and after working or exercising outside
• Find a cooling center/hydration station
• Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day (mid-day)
• Check on at-risk friends, family, and neighbors at least twice a day
• Check the UV Index
• Check the heat risk map
