An arrest has been made in the murder of a young Mesa woman that occurred in 1989.

More than three decades ago, Susan Amy Morse was found dead in her apartment near Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue on Oct. 16, 1989.

At the time of her death, the 22-year-old woman lived alone and there were no clear signs of a forced entry into her apartment.

A year after the murder of Morse, a woman reported she was sexually assaulted in her home in the same neighborhood of the homicide.

Police determined that evidence from both crime scenes were connected, but no suspects were identified until now.

Maricopa County Attorney reported that 58-year-old Thomas Davis Cox was indicted in March 2022 following the 1989 killing and another 1990 criminal incident.

Cox has been indicted on a total of 16 counts in two cases, which include first-degree murder, sexual assault, burglary, and kidnapping.

Cox was arrested located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he had been living. On April 23, Cox was extradited to Maricopa County from El Paso County.

Cox is being held on a $1 million cash bond..
