Mayor David D. Ortega has selected David Simmons as his new chief of staff. Simmons started his professional career with the city of Scottsdale, working as an engineering tech and development representative for more than 12 years here before moving on to increased responsibilities in other organizations.

“David has demonstrated a passion for public service, working for both the cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, in addition to volunteer roles with a number of non-profit organizations,” said Mayor Ortega. “I am proud to welcome him back to the city of Scottsdale, where his skills and experience will be vital to managing the day-to-day activity in the mayor’s office.”

David Simmons has a bachelor’s degree in urban planning from Arizona State University, and a master’s degree in administrative leadership from Northern Arizona University. He has volunteered on the boards of Aunt Rita’s Foundation and one•n•ten, and as the LGBTQ liaison to the Scottsdale city manager’s office.

He starts as Mayor Ortega’s chief of staff Monday, March 21.

Mayor Ortega also complimented Rachel Smetana, his previous chief of staff, who served in that role for two mayors over more than six years.

“Rachel provided wonderful service to the community as the mayor’s chief of staff for many challenging years. In her new role managing Vista del Camino Community Center, she continues to serve her community with the same passion and compassion that she brought to the mayor’s office.”
