‘Mr. Rape Torture Kill,’ Arrested in Phoenix
A shocking announcement came Thursday afternoon when authorities made the arrest in Phoenix of a man who called himself “Mr. Rape, Torture, Kill.”
61-year-old Cary Jay Smith was released from a state hospital in 2020 and moved from San Diego to Phoenix He had spent two decades in a California state hospital. His arrest in Phoenix came after he threatened the mother of his young sex offense victim online.
Smith was committed to a California state hospital in 1999 after his wife gave a psychiatrist a letter he wrote with fantasies about sex acts with a 7-year-old neighborhood boy. According to authorities, Smith reportedly “openly (fantasized) about raping and killing children.”
During his hearings, Smith reportedly testified that in fact he had fantasies about sexually assaulting and killing boys. He was locked up because prosecutors said he was a danger to children.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer told 10News in 2020, that he calls himself Mr. RTK, which stands for Rape, Torture, Kill. That self-proclaimed titled is exactly what kept him locked in the state facility. Smith allegedly said, “If you don’t cut off my penis and hands I will molest again.”
Following his release in 2020 from the state hospital, Smith was required to register as a sex offender. Reports say has moved around several times since his release, ultimately residing in Phoenix. Smith moved into an apartment near 19th Avenue and Hatcher.
Police say Smith recently contacted the mother of one of his victims because he allegedly was angry about what she said about him online. He supposedly wanted the woman to believe he had to return to California to scare her.
Smith was arrested and booked into a Maricopa County jail on Feb. 2, 2022, on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender online.
During his initial court appearance in Phoenix, officials went over his history, detailing how he admitted he would offend again. His diagnoses with mental and sexual disorders was also discussed.
Smith is being held on a cash-only bond and is expected to return to court on Feb. 9, 2022.
