What do you get when you mesh a chef, a pandemic and bagels all together?
You get a pretty awesome startup company.

The UM is pleased to introduce you to what may be the valley’s best bagel!

Arizona man Charles Blonkenfeld, who previously worked as a private chef in hotel hospitality industry has found his new calling during the pandemic, bagel making.

Founder and owner of Bagelfeld Bagels, Blonkenfeld is in the process of opening his own bagel shop after selling his touch of New York bagels at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers Market for the last year.

Prior to COVID-19, Blonkenfeld a private chef and caterer had never made a bagel. During the lockdowns, he found himself out of work and his private chef business came to a screeching halt.  It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that he even thought about making bagels.

Blokenfeld who was already set up with a private kitchen for his catering company, spent his time perfecting his bagel recipes.

Blokenfeld acknowledges that the pandemic truly inspired him rather than set him back.

As luck would have it, he was quickly introduced at the farmer’s market on Saturdays. Just two weeks later he was selling at the Uptown Market on Saturday and Wednesdays and before he knew it adding employees to keep up with the demand.

He started a Kickstarter with the intent to purchase his own equipment, but quickly switched gears and his business plan to raise money for his own bakery and bagel shop. His fundraiser blew past his goal of $27,000. He is planning to be set up and selling bagels out of his very own shop within a few months.

Bagelfeld’s bagels are described as an artisan type bagel with a crisp outside and chewy inside which is what helps makes his bagels unique..
