Home, sweet home. The Arizona Coyotes select hometown talent in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Coyotes selected forward Josh Doan, son of Coyotes legend Shane Doan, with the No. 37 pick, their first pick of the second round.

Josh Doan, 19, and 6-foot-2, 176 pounds, is coming off of a stellar, 70-point season with the Chicago Steelheads, ranking No. 4 in USHL scoring. He registered 31 goals and 39 assists in 53 games.

“Being selected by Arizona would be an honor for anyone who grew up (here),” Josh Doan said. “No matter where you’re from, it’s always going to be an honor to be selected by the team that’s from your home city. Being around the (local) rinks my whole life, as a kid, it just makes it that much sweeter, and cooler. Growing up with my dad and going to his games and being a part of the fan side made it a really cool experience today for me and my family.”

His father, Shane Doan was in his seventh season with the franchise when Josh was born.

Doan Senior was originally drafted No. 7 overall in 1995 by the Winnipeg Jets and played 21 seasons with the Coyotes franchise. He is the all-time leader in games played (1,540), goals (402), assists (570), points (972), power-play goals (128) and game-winning goals (69).

One of the faces of the Arizona Coyotes for two decades, Doan is part of their front office now, and only saw Friday night the draft list whittling down to the point he knew it was possible Josh would be their pick. Shane Doan excused himself from all scouting meetings when son Josh was brought up. It happened early in the second round Saturday when the Coyotes took Josh Doan with the 37th pick, bringing in a prospect homegrown in the Valley.

“Today was a day he’s worked a long time and hard for,” said Shane Doan, who’s now Arizona’s chief hockey development officer. “It’s surreal that it happened to be the Coyotes. He deserves every single bit of everything he’s getting today and I’m so proud of him.”
