Arizona Interscholastic Association Votes to Cancel High School Winter Sports Season Due to Surging COVID-19  Cases

After three hours of discussions, the Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board voted 5 to 4 on Friday to cancel the high school winter sports season amid a continued surge in COVID-19 cases statewide.

The board, during a special meeting held Friday morning, made the decision after a recommendation from a health advisory committee.

High school sports in Arizona will not happen this winter for students.

The AIA had already delayed the start of the winter sports season until Jan. 18, but reconsidered that move because of the continued trend of rising coronavirus cases, which has led to Arizona having the highest rate of positive cases in the country.

The vote came on the same day the Arizona Department of Health Services reported more than 11,000 new positive cases as the state is approaching 10,000 deaths since the pandemic began in early 2020.
