Southwest Airlines will add more international service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport when it starts nonstop flights to Cancun in April.

The new route begins April 12 and will operate once daily. Tickets are now on sale on Southwest’s website.

While many airlines have cut back routes and schedules, Southwest has seen Phoenix as a strategic place to expand and position itself for the future. It launched flights from Sky Harbor to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in October and Palm Springs, California, in November.

The Dallas-based carrier has also announced Phoenix routes to Chicago O’Hare Airport beginning in February and Colorado Springs launching in March.

Southwest also has a fare sale through Dec. 16 on some of its nonstop routes.

Fares begin as low as $49 one way from Phoenix and the airline has opened up its schedule through the summer months, making it possible to book through Aug. 16, 2021.
