More than 800 Arizona businesses have applied to the Arizona Department of Health Services seeking approval to reopen, despite some state-issued benchmarks for those industries not being met in certain counties.
As of Wednesday evening, of the 800 applications that have been submitted, 38 businesses have been approved and dozens have been denied.
Steve Elliott, communications director at ADHS said, “ADHS staff are reviewing them as quickly as possible,” in communication on Tuesday.
For the businesses that have been granted approval to open, they can appeal the state’s decision.
Once a business has been approved, it can reopen immediately, said Holly Poynter, public information officer at ADHS. The approved businesses must follow the guidelines that ADHS and the Governor’s Office issued on Aug. 10 alongside the benchmarks. Set Benchmarks were issued specifically for movie theaters, restaurants, water parks, bars that serve food, and bars that do not serve food.
Here are the specific benchmarks for each industry:
- Bars and nightclubs WITH dine-in services
- Bars and nightclubs WITHOUT dine-in services
- Gyms and fitness centers
- Indoor movie theaters
- Water parks and tube operators
Approved businesses that are located in counties where benchmarks have not yet been met, Maricopa County, for example, must prove how they can “exceed” the state’s safety requirements, including limiting the number of people, requiring face masks, frequent cleaning, and maintaining social distancing.
