Arizona Gas Prices Have Hit Rock Bottom

Filling up the gas tank will be cheap this Memorial Day weekend.

Prices plummeted in March and April but as the long holiday weekend nears, petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan with Gas Buddy said Wednesday that demand is rising as more of the country opens up after COVID-19 restrictions impacted travel.

It’s going to be an unusual summer. The lowest prices are likely to be right about now and progress,” De Haan said.

Prices won’t peak at the beginning as they normally do, he said.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Phoenix on Thursday was $2.16 and $1.86 in Tucson. The statewide average was $2.10.

At this time a year ago, the average was $3.17 per gallon in the state.

“As we move ahead, July 4th could be in the low ($2 price) and Labor Day could be in the two to two and a half dollar range.”

DeHaan said a second wave of COVID-19 could send prices down again, but overall, most areas would see a gradual increase in prices.
