It is known to many as Arizona’s beach. But over the last few years there have been safety concerns about visiting Rocky Point, known as Puerto Peñasco in Mexico.

A new coalition of business leaders and property owners has formed in Rocky Point to try to change that perception.

“A lot of people have a fear coming from the Phoenix metropolitan area that it’s not safe to travel here,” said Keith Allen, director of sales of Encantame Towers, a condo development being built south of Rocky Point.

Allen is part of the newly formed Peñasco Business Coalition. He said it’s encouraging Arizona residents “to come visit our wonderful beach community.” He said they also want visitors to know it’s safe to make the trip.

He noted the main highway, Mexico Route 8, leading to Rocky Point has been designated as a safety corridor. In 2018, the Arizona Department of Transportation worked with Mexican officials to establish the safety corridor. ADOT also trained law enforcement and military officers patrolling the highway in Mexico on how to clear crashes and restore traffic flow.

“It is very safe for travel, morning, noon or night – it really does not matter,” Allen said of Route 8. “The road is continuously monitored by authorities to promote safety and to assist in case of any car troubles.”

Allen said the coalition was also formed to highlight the area’s many events, attractions, accommodations and activities. Most recently, Rocky Point saw its first cruise ship set sail.

It is currently whale watching season, and in a few weeks the beaches will be packed with spring break visitors. Last year, Forbes listed Rocky Point among the top 10 destinations for spring break, which Allen said, “really put us on the map.”
