The Women’s History Alliance Hosting An Artist Series and Fundraising Event To Benefit The Frances Munds Suffrage Memorial
In an upcoming two day event Modern Manor, WAYLA Studios and The Women’s History Alliance will join forces to bring together Phoenix’s creative community to raise funds to build a statue of the groundbreaking activist and suffragist Frances Munds.
On April 23, 2019, Governor Doug Ducey signed HB 2183 (the Frances Munds Suffrage Memorial) into law. With the passing, it allows for her statue to stand directly across from the Arizona State Capitol at Wesley Bolin Plaza and will be the first statue of a woman on state land.
The group is working together to raise funds for the Francis Munds statue. The group hopes that her presence will forever be a reminder to all citizens that no matter your race, religion, gender, or creed you have rights and freedoms here. Her coalition of miners, labor leaders, farmers, ranchers, religious communities, Democrats, and Republicans was revolutionary then and now – we must not ever forget this power.
Frances Munds was only the third female state senator in the country and told the press, “Our friends, the true blue conservatives will be shocked to think of a grandmother sitting in the state Senate.” She forced legislation through protecting women and children.
A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Women’s History Alliance with hopes to get them closer to their $250,000 goal of building the Frances Munds statue at Wesley Bolin Plaza, to not only change the statistics on women statues in the US (less than 8%), but let her stand as a reminder of equality to future generations out west.
Day 1 – November 16th is the kick-off with all artists, food trucks, DJ, special guests (Statue Sculptor – Stephanie Hunter), and Live Art in Studio A (Joe Dugan), attending.
Day 2 – November 17th is for return guests to shop and continue conversations with the artists.
A raffle ticket, art purchase (portion of proceeds), or tax deductible donation will help to the fund the Frances Munds Statue.
