On Thursday, The Arizona State Board of Education announced that it has approved $500,000 in additional funding for adult education programs.

“These dollars are going to make a critical difference to reduce the waitlist for people seeking adult education across the state,” Ben Petersen, spokesman for the governor’s office, told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Petersen said the funding aligns with the state’s Achieve60AZ project, which aims to have 60% of adult Arizonans earn a degree, certificate or license by 2030.

“We know that people who have these advanced certificates earn higher wages. They have more opportunities in the workforce,” he said.

The money will be distributed as follows:

  • Cochise County Community Colleges, $25,000
  • Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County, $45,000
  • Pima Community College, $165,000
  • Queen Creek Unified District, $20,000
  • Rio Salado Community Colleges, $185,000
  • Santa Cruz County Continuing Education, $20,000
  • Somerton Elementary District, $15,000
  • Yavapai College, $25,000
