The City of Tucson moving forward with their plan to raise the age to buy tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21 years old.

Tucson City Council members voted 4 to 3 to approve the ordinance on Thursday night.

Council members first brought up the idea of raising the age restriction back in August of last year.

Pima County rejected a similar ordinance in August of this year.

The city council will meet for a formal vote on October 22. The ordinance would go into effect on January 1, 2020, with a 90-day education period for retailers.

Paul Durham, who represents ward three, argued in favor of the ordinance. He claims that 68 percent of residents support it.

“Voters elected us to lead and they now have our backs on this one,” Durham said.
