They say that every dog has his day and for one lucky Phoenix shelter dog, his day has arrived.

Monte, a 2-year-old terrier mix, who was once a resident of the HALO Animal Rescue in Phoenix, has been adopted and will soon be a Disney star in the live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp. Monte has landed the starring role of Tramp.

After initially coming from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Monte was one of  50 dogs sent from New Mexico in April 2018. The HALO Animal Rescue partners with shelters across the west in an effort to save animals who could be euthanized.

Monte just happened to be at the right place when animal trainers visited the shelter looking for dogs with star quality. The trainers were on a top-secret project and they liked what they saw in Monte, according to People magazine. Monte was adopted by one of the film’s animal trainers.

It was no surprise to the Phoenix shelter staff that Monte was selected. They saw how much he loved attention, was very friendly, loved to greet people and give kisses. He was also already trained on how to sit and walk on a leash.

Monte’s adopters say he has been a very good boy and is loving his life in California. Aside from his filming and his publicity appearances, he is leading a happy, normal life.

Monte’s character will be voiced by actor Justin Theroux. Monte’s co-star, a Cocker Spaniel who is playing Lady, will be voiced by Tessa Thompson. Other actors set to be included in the film will be Janelle Monáe as Peg, Sam Elliott as Trusty the Bloodhound, Benedict Wong as Bull and Ashley Jensen as Jock.

The remake features live animals with actors’ voices and will premiere November 12 on Disney+, the company’s proprietary streaming service.
