Gilbert’s Parks and Recreation Department recently released a new look at “The Strand @ Gilbert.” The Strand will be 25-acre water park in Gilbert Regional Park.

The water park will have three lagoons. Guests will be able to ski, wakeboard, kneeboard, surf, and run an inflatable obstacle course.

The park will also have areas to swim, float on tubes, kayak, paddleboard, and practice yoga. Guests will be able to relax on the beach, enjoy for-rent cabanas, and eat a bite at a full-service restaurant and bar.

The opening of the park will be later than originally planned; it will open the summer of 2021, which is a year later than initially announced.

“A more realistic date was determined through total design-build schedule,” said McLaughlin, the chief executive officer of Strand Resorts, LLC..

McLaughlin stated that these projects usually take two years, and “much of the delay is when the plans are sitting in design review or permitting.”

“From application to permit issued can be anything from 30 to 120 days. We have no control over those time frames,” he said.

“While those permit[s] are being process[ed], we are working on other things that need to be done. Something is always happening and we just schedule according to the longest date out for a permit process.”

The park is a private-public partnership with the City of Gilbert. The Strand will be responsible for building and operating the park.

While the water park is not expected to open until 2021, the first phase of Gilbert Regional Park is set to open in Sept. 2019. It will include a playground, splash pad, tot playground, and bathrooms.

The master plan of Gilbert Regional Park shows that phase two will include 10 acres, and phase three will add five acres
