Severe weather can damage power lines and other electrical equipment can cause continued dangers after a storm has passed. The City of Phoenix offers an important reminder to be aware of and prepared for dangers.
Following a storm, if you come across a power line on the ground, stay away and warn others to stay away. Downed lines do not have to be sparking to be live. Any utility wire, including telephone or cable lines sagging can contain energized power making the line very dangerous.
Be aware that tree limbs or debris can hide an electrical hazard. And a downed power line can electrify things such as chain link fences around it. Report the issue and stay clear.
If power is off in an area due to storm and there is a power line down, it is important to know that a “dead” line could become energized once power has been restored. It is always best to keep a distance.
